I'm a little bored with what I'm reading lately. Actually, I haven't even been in the reading mood for a few weeks now, but I'm forcing myself to do it because I've got a pile of books to be read on my nightstand.
For the most part, I like magic stories--Jim Butcher, Sherrilyn Kenyon, Charlaine Harris, Kim Harrison--the list gets pretty long, but all the authors I consider "my favorites" are in the paranormal/supernatural/urban fantasy genre. Since this is the kind of story I write, I've been told several times it's a good idea to read a lot of that style.
Except now I'm getting kind of bored with it. I still like magic stories, I'm just sick of the angst-ridden heroes who are like "I have all this power, but is it corrupting me? Am I becoming evil?" I just want to grab them and yell "Yes, you are evil, now go with it."
I know part of what makes a book enjoyable is the struggle of the main character, morally, spiritually, physically and all that crap. But maybe the real struggle can be for total world domination or something. Maybe the moral struggle isn't should he do it, but why wouldn't he do it. Maybe we can have a hero who really doesn't mind that he's a bad guy. It would be a nice change.
